VAMOS Strategy Day: Embracing the Digital Transformation of Logistics

What Are We Aiming For?

The VAMOS Strategy Day brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss future scenarios concerning autonomous mobility in smart spaces. One key area of focus that rose to attention was the logistics hubs and depots. The key objectives outlined during the discussions were:

1. Improving Safety

Safety is a paramount concern in logistics. The digitalization of logistics processes aims to enhance the safety of operations, reducing accidents and ensuring the well-being of personnel.

2. Solving the Staff Shortage

The logistics industry faces a significant challenge with personnel shortages. By leveraging automation and digital technologies, we can alleviate the pressure on human resources, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.

3. Minimizing Energy Use

In a bid to contribute to sustainability, minimizing energy consumption in logistics operations is crucial. Digital solutions can optimize energy use, making logistics hubs more environmentally friendly.

4. Ensuring Maintenance Security

Maintenance security ensures that logistics operations are uninterrupted. Digital tools can predict maintenance needs and streamline the process, ensuring that all equipment is functioning optimally.

Key Considerations

Charging Infrastructure Needs

To support the digitalization and automation of logistics, optimizing charging infrastructure is critical. This includes:

  • Optimizing Charging Time and Location: Ensuring that charging stations are conveniently located and that charging times are efficient to avoid operational delays.

Multimodal Freight Documents

The integration of multimodal freight documents is essential for the seamless transfer of goods across different transportation modes. Digitalizing these documents ensures accuracy and speed, reducing delays and errors.

Intralogistics

Intralogistics focuses on the internal flow of materials within a logistics hub. Digital transformation in this area includes:

  • Robotics: Implementing robotic solutions for handling and moving goods within the warehouse.
  • Digital Twins: Creating digital replicas of physical assets to monitor and optimize operations.

Standardization and Regulatory Requirements

Adhering to standards and regulatory requirements is crucial for the successful implementation of digital solutions. This includes ensuring that all digital tools and processes meet industry standards and comply with legal requirements.

Conclusion

“It was yet another great and productive workshop on VAMOS strategy focusing mostly on specific use cases that were originally agreed in the previous workshop in Vierumäki in April. Based on this workshop’s results and decisions made by the Management Board, we have a clear way forward, setting up working groups for specific topics and starting the work towards concrete actions,” says Senior Ecosystem Lead Tuulia Haveri

The VAMOS Strategy Day held in June 2024 has paved the way for a more efficient, safe, and sustainable future in logistics through digital transformation. With clear objectives and a focus on critical considerations, the logistics industry is well on its way to embracing the future of digital logistics.
